    About Low Voltage Landscape Lighting

    1. What is the difference between Outdoor Lighting and Landscape Lighting?

Outdoor Lighting fixtures are decorative visual elements primarily used to provide illumination in key (high traffic) areas. They are also used to coordinate with and compliment the architectural appearance of a home. With this objective in mind, they are typically intended to be "seen and not hidden or obscured." Outdoor Lighting fixtures are typically hung from porch ceilings and installed on posts, columns or walls.

Landscape Lighting is different. While it can be used to illuminate high traffic areas and further enhance architectural features of a home, Landscape Lighting is also used to bring key elements of your Outdoor Space to life after the sun goes down.

In order to achieve this objective, The Landscape Lighting Company strategically mount lighting fixtures on trees or structures such as gazebos and houses. Unlike Outdoor Lighting fixtures, we are more focused on hiding the fixture and eliminating any blinding effect the light may create.

By utilizing the different types of Landscape Lights that are available, and coupled with unique and creative positioning techniques, we are able to create a variety of different lighting effects in order to showcase and further enhance a particular tree, shrub or landscape feature.

    2. What does “Low Voltage” Landscape Lighting mean?

Most North American homes utilize 120 volts to operate many of the electrical components within the home, such as lights, power outlets, and small appliances.

When you hear the term "Low Voltage Lighting," it is referring to Landscape Lighting that is powered by 12 volts instead of 120 volts—the same voltage that your car or truck utilizes to power its lights and accessories.

When installing a Low Voltage Landscape Lighting System, we install a transformer which reduces the house voltage from 120 volts to 12 volts. The landscape transformer plugs into an existing (GFI) outlet, in a similar fashion to an appliance. The landscape wire is then connected to the transformer, which distributes 12-volt power to the Landscape Lighting fixtures.

Most Landscape Lighting fixtures are designed to operate in a range of 9–15 volts.

As a result of the lower voltage, far less energy is consumed to power the Landscape Lights. It is also much safer, and in most jurisdictions it does not require a "certified" electrician to install the system.

    3. What are the basic components of a Low Voltage Lighting System?

Low Voltage Landscape Lighting System Components

    1. Transformer
    2. Landscape (low voltage) wire
    3. Light fixtures

Transformer DetailsMost of the transformers we install are of "stainless steel" construction and are typically mounted outside the home. We elect to use this type of transformer because it is resistant to inclement weather such as rain and snow and will last for many years—in most cases, decades to come.We install transformers close to an existing exterior (GFI) power outlet. If there are insufficient or poorly located power outlets, we have certified electricians that will install additional outlets.System Design ConsiderationsWhen we design a Landscape Lighting System, we carefully take into consideration a number of key factors:

    1. Number and type of fixtures being installed
    2. Electrical loading calculations
    3. Distance (runs) from transformers to fixtures
    4. Voltage drops across the circuit
    4. Is Landscape Lighting expensive to operate?

No, LED landscape lighting is a LOT cheaper to operate than previous lighting systems, because LED lights use approximately 80% less electrical consumption than an Incandescent light bulb.

    A Practical Example

For example, a "20 Watt Incandescent" light bulb can be replaced by a 4 to 5 watt LED bulb with a similar light output.

    Putting It Into Perspective

10 LED landscape fixtures consume about the same electricity as 1 60-watt Incandescent light bulb!

    5. How To Install Low-Voltage Outdoor Lighting?

Low-voltage outdoor lights are easy to install, and also the safest! These outdoor lights can usually be found on spikes which are easily pushed into the ground. Instead of running complicated and dangerous wires, low-voltage outdoor lighting uses power from a transformer by way of a two-core cable.

    Installation Steps

    1. Power the Transformer
Plug your 12-volt transformer into an indoor socket that's protected from the weather (garages or sheds will be fine as long as they are weatherproof).

    2. Run the Cable Through the Wall
Depending on the circuit length and load, the cable size may vary—drill an appropriately sized hole in the wall (or door, or window frame), line with a conduit, then pass the cable through.

    3. Seal the Opening
Plug the hole with a silicone sealant to protect against any moisture.

    4. Bury the Cable
The cable should be buried inside the ground—it's safe to do so because of the low voltage.

    5. Install the Indoor Switch
Install a switch indoors and run a two-core-and-earth cable back to the position of the junction box at a length of 1mm².

    6. Make the Connections
Ensuring that the power is off with a voltage tester, isolate the circuit and then cut through the main circuit cable to make the appropriate connections in the junction box.

    6. What is the warranty and after-sales service?

We have one simple business approach: We want our customers to always be satisfied with their purchases. If you are not, then we will do everything in our power to make it right.

Our guarantee is that you'll be satisfied with your purchase. If you receive any items from us and are not satisfied prior to installation, then we'll be happy to accept your exchange or return at any time.

Product WarrantyOnce installed, GARDENCOIN Lighting warrants that our Landscape Lighting Products will be free from defects in material and workmanship for the below periods:

    • Aluminum housings: Five (5) years
    • Stainless Steel housings: Five (5) years
    • Brass housings: Lifetime

Note: Low voltage landscape lighting fixture housings made of brass or copper do naturally patina in color, which is not a defect.

How to File a Warranty ClaimTo replace a Product that has a warranted defect, the Original Purchaser shall return any allegedly defective parts or Products to the authorized GARDENCOIN Lighting distributor or Reseller where the Product was purchased from, including:

    • Proof of purchase

    7. Solar Lighting VS Low Voltage Landscape Lighting (LED).

    Advantages of Solar Lighting

    1. Energy Saving & Environmental Protection
Solar street lights use natural light, reducing electricity consumption. They are pollution-free and radiation-free, aligning with modern green environmental protection concepts.

    2. High Technology, Low Maintenance
High technology content with low post-maintenance costs.

    3. Flexible Installation
Installation is flexible and convenient, allowing users to easily choose and adjust the capacity size of solar street lights according to their needs.

Advantages of Low Voltage Landscape Lighting (LED)

    1. Safe Option
120V can severely injure or even kill a person, but 12V will only emit a slight shock. It is also recommended for outdoor use since lower voltage installations are not dangerous when exposed to natural elements such as rain or wind.

    2. Longer Lifespan
12V LEDs have a longer lifespan due to having no working parts that will burn or break over time, reducing costs of replacing burnt-out or broken bulbs.

    3. Cost-Efficient
LEDs have become the most popular form of low voltage lighting. They are very cost-effective, requiring less energy to output the same level of light.

    4. Versatility
Lower voltage allows for smaller bulbs, meaning your lighting setup can be more diverse and creative. You can use a wide range of fixture types—from patio wall sconces to walkway path lights—and finally light those awkward or tight areas around your space.

    5. Adds to the Aesthetics
12V LEDs can enhance the aesthetics of outdoor landscapes for homes and businesses. Popular options include string lights, spotlights, path lights, and wall lights.

    6. Increases Security
Outdoor lighting provides safety and security. Burglars avoid well-lit homes and offices. Studies show outdoor lighting reduces residential crime at night by 39%.

    7. Easy to Install
Low voltage light bulbs are easy to install. You don't need electrical experience to light up front yard pathways and highlight your garden with charming vibes.

    Disadvantages of Solar Lighting

    1. Low Component Life & Cost Performance
Low component life and poor cost performance.

    2. Theft Risk
Batteries are easily stolen (products with lights can be directly pulled away).

    3. Low Conversion Efficiency
    Low energy conversion efficiency.

    4. Maintenance Requirements
Snow, dust, and moisture can accumulate on horizontal PV panels, impacting solar energy conversion. Panels need regular cleaning—especially in places like Saudi Arabia.

    5. Geography & Weather Dependence
Since solar energy comes from the sun, geography and weather directly affect lighting conditions. Continuous cloudy or rainy days impact illumination, and brightness may not meet national standards. Solar street lights sometimes cannot light at all, especially in winter.

    6. Limited Brightness
Solar landscape lighting is limited by solar panel size, so brightness often cannot reach desired levels, impacting landscape aesthetics.

Disadvantages of Low Voltage Landscape Lighting (LED)

    • High installation cost
    • Complex installation
    • Higher cost than solar products
