About Low Voltage Well Lights
1. What is a well light and where should I use it?
Well lights are recessed into the ground or hardscape, with only the lens flush or slightly above grade. Use them for uplighting trees from the base, grazing walls, illuminating columns, or lighting pathways from ground level without visible fixtures. Ideal for clean, minimalist landscapes where you want the light, not the fixture, to be the focus.
2. What's the difference between well lights and spotlights?
Well Lights: Buried/recessed, flush with ground or deck surface. Best for uplighting from grade level, grazing, or lighting across flat surfaces.
Spotlights: Staked above ground, adjustable angle. Best for distant targeting, tree canopies, and flexible repositioning.
Use well lights when you want zero visual obstruction and a seamless look.
3. Are Gardencoin well lights waterproof? Can water pool over them?
Yes — our well lights are IP67 or higher rated, meaning they withstand temporary submersion and heavy rain. The sealed lens and corrosion-resistant housing handle standing water. However, ensure the drainage hole (weep hole) at the base remains clear to prevent trapped moisture inside the fixture body.
4. How deep do I bury a well light?
Install so the lens sits flush with grade — typically 6–10 inches deep depending on model height. For hardscape (paver, deck) installation, cut a precise opening and use the included trim ring. Leave 2–3 inches of gravel or drainage rock at the bottom of the well to prevent waterlogging.
5. Can I drive or walk over well lights?
Most Gardencoin well lights are rated for occasional foot traffic and light lawn equipment (mowers, wheelbarrows) when properly installed flush with grade. They are not rated for vehicle traffic. For driveways or parking areas, use dedicated paver/inground fixtures rated for load-bearing.
6. Can I mix well lights with path lights and spotlights on one transformer?
Yes. All Gardencoin low voltage fixtures run on 12V AC. Total system wattage must stay below 80% of transformer capacity. Well lights typically range from 3W–7W LED — factor this in when sizing your transformer alongside higher-wattage spotlights.
7. My well light fills with water or the lens fogs up.
Check drainage: Ensure the weep hole at the fixture base isn't blocked by soil or mulch.
Check gasket/seal: If the lens gasket is damaged or the housing cracked, water can seep in. Contact support for replacement gaskets.
Condensation vs. leak: A small amount of condensation on the lens interior after heavy rain is normal and will evaporate. Persistent pooling indicates a seal failure.
8. What if my well light arrives damaged or won't sit flush?
Contact support@gardencoin.com within 14 days with your order number and installation photos. For hardscape models, verify your cutout dimensions match the trim ring spec before installing — replacement trim rings are available if needed.
